PROJECT PROFILE: Interim Corporate Controller The CFO of a large company (Revenues:500 Million)called one day and ask for my help with a project that he thought might last for 60 - 90 days. He requested me to do three things - facilitate closing the July books in 5 business days, improve the morale of the accounting and finance team that was losing their jobs in several months, and create a sense of urgency within this same team to accomplish the goals of the company in those same months. I succeeded. The project was extended to seven months. I was asked to serve as interim corporate controller. During that time, I assisted in the merger of several integrated companies' books and accounting systems while relocating them to another state before December 31st. I assisted with presenting a clean audit for the merged companies' first year of doing business together by February 15th and provide K-1s to the investors no later than February 27th. My goals and those of the team were met.
One team member comments: "The one thing that I don't think you convey clearly enough, and it may be hard for you to realize or to put into words, is how you held us together, fought for us with Corporate, and got the best work you could out of us. I don't think there is one person in management who went through what we did who would have done it or could have done it without you. You took the best of a bad situation and made good people do great things to achieve the Company's objectives. We had no reason to work hard for upper management except for the checks that certain people were promised at the end. We did it though, because we wanted to support each other and we trusted you. I worked 84 hours in one week during the first month end close after the Winston Salem controller left. I didn't do it for the fun of it. I did it for other team members, and you, and all the people who were trying to get the books closed and prove to these people in Houston that we knew what we were doing. You inspired us in ways that I don't think you even realize.
You have people here who LOVE you. People who are better people, stronger employees because they learned from you, and our company is lucky to still have some of them. I don't think you have any idea of what you did here, but it was fabulous, wonderful, and unbelievable. You should be a mergers and acquisitions specialist. The financial knowledge that you bring, along with your personal ability to motivate and inspire people, makes you uniquely qualified to do this kind of work. I think this is your niche and the only caveat that I would say to you is that you are so powerful a force, that people will fall in love with you wherever you go and part of your job will always be to leave them, so just know that."
